Keynote speakers – Mark Reiner, Symbiotic Engineering
Mark is a founding Principal of Symbiotic Engineering in Boulder, Colorado. Mark received his PhD in the sustainable urban infrastructure program at the University of Colorado Denver and focused on the life cycle energy and GHG emission impacts associated with many of the primary sectors in the urban environment (e.g. building energy use, transportation, water/wastewater, and materials). Mark began Symbiotic Engineering with Dr. Michael Whitaker (also received his PhD from the same program at UC Denver) while they were providing technical guidance, as PhD candidates, to the City and County of Denver for both the city’s GHG inventory and the development and evaluation of Denver’s Climate Action Plan (Greenprint Denver). This experience led to the development of CarbonCity SIMS, a robust software platform that readily incorporates multiple data streams (including current and historical facility-level data from the City and the Utility) to evaluate progress towards energy/resource consumption goals, that provides city/utility decision-makers a readily accessible tool.
Mark also has an undergrad in geologic engineering from the Colorado School of Mines and a Masters in Science degree from University of Colorado Denver. Mark also serves as President of the Board for Birambye International, a 501 (c) 3 non-profit that provides in-kind technical assistance to develop economic enterprises in Rwanda.
